A photographer’s guide to getting married at Jupiter Artland
There are wedding venues that are beautiful. There are venues that are unique. And then, very occasionally, there is a venue that stops you in your tracks and makes you think: I have never seen anything quite like this.
Jupiter Artland is one of those places.
I’ve been booked to photograph a wedding there next month, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited. I visited recently to prepare, and I very happily enjoyed a few hours exploring the park. Shown around by one of the events team on a gorgeous sunny day, I arrived already curious and left completely captivated. After eight years photographing weddings at numerous venues, that doesn’t happen often.
If you’re searching for a wedding venue near Edinburgh that feels genuinely unlike anything else – somewhere your guests will talk about for years – Jupiter Artland deserves to be at the top of your list.
In this post, you’ll discover:
- What makes Jupiter Artland such an extraordinary setting for a wedding
- A guide to the key wedding spaces and what each one offers
- Why the sheer scale of the venue is both its greatest gift and something to plan carefully around

The Moment You Arrive
Nothing quite prepares you for Jupiter Artland.
Driving along an ordinary West Lothian lane, there’s no hint of what’s coming. Then the gates appear, and from that moment the experience begins. Dense native woodland lines the driveway, creating a sense of calm and quiet anticipation before the landscape suddenly, dramatically transforms. The Cells of Life appear: a Teletubby-esque world of terraced hills and lakes that will make your jaw drop out loud.
It’s an emotional journey in miniature, and it happens before your wedding has even begun.
Your guests, most of whom will never have been before, will arrive wide-eyed. That sense of wonder sets the tone for everything that follows.
The Wedding Spaces And What They Offer
One of Jupiter Artland’s greatest strengths is the sheer variety of spaces available, both indoors and outdoors. Here’s a guide to each one.

The Ballroom
Tucked inside Bonnington House, the Ballroom is Jupiter Artland’s most elegant indoor ceremony space. With its ornate ceiling, crystal chandeliers, and statement marble fireplace, it has real presence and atmosphere. It can seat up to 70 guests for a ceremony and 90 standing guests for a drinks reception. Availability will depend on the exhibition calendar, so it’s worth discussing with the venue team early.

The Ballroom Garden
Just outside, the Ballroom Garden is beautifully planted with spring flowers and I imagine it will be equally stunning through the summer. It’s an intimate, abundant space that feels secluded from the wider park – a lovely spot for drinks, photographs, or simply a moment to breathe.

The Temple of Apollo
Tucked within the woodland, the Temple of Apollo offers one of the most intimate outdoor ceremony options at Jupiter Artland – an exchange of vows under leafy shade with a sense of calm and seclusion that feels very special. For couples who want something quieter and more private, this is worth serious consideration.

The Glasshouse
The Glasshouse is the venue’s main events space, and it’s a remarkable room. Flooded with natural light and home to Florence Peake’s stunning floor mural To Love and Cherish, it works beautifully as both a ceremony space and an evening celebration venue. There’s a built-in bar, and the space can be easily cordoned off, making it flexible for different parts of the day. It’s one of those rooms that looks extraordinary in photographs without needing much additional styling. It has a capacity for 120 seated or 180 standing guests.

The Steadings Gallery
Available from October to April, the Steadings Gallery is a versatile blank canvas with smooth concrete floors and high white walls that can be dressed entirely as you wish. A glass door opens onto the Steadings Courtyard, bringing an outdoor element into the space, with the option to add fire pits and additional seating. It can accommodate up to 84 guests standing or 54 seated for dinner, making it a strong option for ceremonies or evening receptions during the autumn and winter months, though availability may depend on the exhibition calendar, so it’s worth discussing with the venue team early.

Café Party
Café Party is something genuinely special and one of the most distinctive spaces I have ever come across at a wedding venue. The entire interior is surrounded by a vivid, site-specific artwork by Swiss artist Nicolas Party, creating an immersive dining experience unlike anything else. For private events, matching artist-edition crockery is included, extending the artwork from the walls onto the table itself. Glazed doors open onto a covered heated terrace, and a more private rear terrace sits alongside Helen Chadwick’s Piss Flowers installation. It seats up to 50 guests and is available from October to April – a wonderful option for an intimate wedding breakfast or evening gathering.

The Cells of Life
If there is one moment at a Jupiter Artland wedding that your guests will never forget, it is this one.
The Cells of Life – those dramatic, rolling terraced hills and lakes that appear seemingly out of nowhere – are unlike anything else in Scotland. As a backdrop for group photographs they are extraordinary: sculptural, surprising, and completely one of a kind. Do be aware that getting a large group of guests there takes longer than you might expect – more on that below.

The Rose Walk
For couple portraits, the Rose Walk is quietly magical. Two ten-metre-high porticos – one Gothic, one in a Chinoiserie style – are connected by a twenty-five-metre-long rose garden filled with white roses. It is romantic, secluded, and full of beautiful detail. I am already planning to spend time here with the couple I am photographing in June.

The Duck Pond and Gateway Pool
These are the kinds of spaces that reveal themselves slowly as you explore – quiet, reflective, and beautiful. Perfect for those in-between moments of a wedding day that often become the most treasured photographs.

How to Plan Your Wedding Timeline at Jupiter Artland
(It’s Bigger Than You Think)
Jupiter Artland is 120 acres. And that scale is both its greatest gift and something to plan very carefully around.
When I walked from the Glasshouse to the Cells of Life, it felt like no distance at all. But moving a group of guests – particularly after a glass or two of champagne – will likely take two to three times as long. This is a venue where generous timing is not just helpful; it is essential.
The park is open to the public during visitor hours, but at 120 acres it is large enough that this rarely impacts the feel of a wedding. What really matters is what happens after the gates close at 5:30pm – from that point on, the entire park is yours. That golden hour and beyond, with Jupiter Artland entirely to yourselves, is something worth planning around and making the absolute most of.
My advice? Shape the logistics around how you want your day to feel, rather than the other way around. The more time you allow, the more of this incredible place you actually get to experience.

Jupiter Artland Wedding Planning Tips
A Wedding Photographer’s Advice
Allow an hour for couple portraits. With a venue this extraordinary, you want time to wander, explore, and find the quiet corners. I’m recommending a full hour to the couple I’m photographing here in June – and I’d say the same to any couple considering Jupiter Artland.
Consider two photographers. With 120 acres and guests spread across multiple spaces, a second photographer is genuinely valuable here – not just for more angles and more coverage, but so that one photographer can stay with guests while the other photographer slips away with the couple for portraits. You won’t miss a moment of what your guests are getting up to, and it’ll be wonderful to look back at those candid images afterwards.
Make the most of the day after 5:30pm. Once the gates close and the park is entirely yours, the light is often at its most beautiful and the atmosphere shifts into something truly magical. Build your evening timeline around this moment.
Consider the seasons carefully. May is a particularly lovely time to get married at Jupiter Artland – the rhododendrons in the woodland are in full bloom and the Ballroom Garden is bursting with colour. Summer brings long evenings and lush greenery. Autumn offers rich tree colour and drama. October through to April also opens up the Steadings Gallery and Café Party as additional spaces – well worth considering if those rooms appeal to you. Do bear in mind that shorter daylight hours in autumn and winter will shape your timeline for outdoor photographs.
Check availability of indoor spaces. Some rooms at Jupiter Artland may not be available for weddings at certain times of year due to the exhibitions. If you have your heart set on a particular space for your ceremony, it’s worth discussing this with the venue team as early as possible.
End with fireworks. Jupiter Artland can accommodate a fireworks display to close your evening, and with a venue this dramatic as the backdrop, it would be an unforgettable way to end the day.

How much does a wedding cost at Jupiter Artland?
Prices for weddings at Jupiter Artland start at £1,000 for a two-hour ceremony in the Ballroom. Rates for the other event spaces vary depending on how long you need them for, the time of year, and any other bespoke requirements you might have.
