Ever wondered why some couples look completely natural and joyful in their wedding photos, while others feel awkward or stiff? The secret often comes down to connection, trust, and practice before the big day. Let me tell you a story about Charlotte and Steve, and how a relaxed photoshoot in Edinburgh made all the difference.
Meeting up again: it felt like old friends
After photographing Charlotte and Steve’s wedding earlier this year, I thought I might not see them again anytime soon. But when they planned a mini moon in Edinburgh, I offered to do a casual photoshoot while they explored the city.
Walking along the Royal Mile, stopping at The City Chambers, outside the Signet Library, strolling along the colourful Victoria Street with all its cobbles, the Vennel Steps, and finally Edinburgh Castle, it felt less like a photoshoot and more like meeting up with old friends for a stroll.
Have you ever felt like photoshoots are awkward or staged? This is exactly why I love engagement shoots—they’re a chance to get to know each other, so by the time your wedding day arrives, you feel completely at ease in front of the camera.

From nervous to confident
Do you feel awkward in front of the camera? Or maybe you’ve never liked a photo of yourself? You are definitely not alone! Almost every couple I meet before their engagement shoot or wedding admits the same thing.
Charlotte and Steve were no exception. At first, the idea of posing felt intimidating. But as we wandered the streets of Edinburgh, they relaxed, laughed together, and shared little moments of connection—holding hands, stealing glances, and sneaking the occasional kiss. By the end of the shoot, they were completely at ease and enjoying themselves.
This is what I love most about my approach: it’s not about stiff or awkward poses. It’s about natural connection, a little gentle guidance, and letting couples focus on each other. They can mess about, laugh, and interact however feels natural—I’ll take care of capturing it all.
Charlotte said it perfectly afterward:
“We feel so lucky to have had the chance to work with you again – it’s such a rare thing for either of us to like a photo of ourselves but you’ve managed to capture so many lovely ones.”

Practical tips for a relaxed engagement shoot in Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a dream for couples’ photography—but how do you make the most of it? Here are my top tips:
- Take your time: Wondering how long an engagement shoot should last? Plan for 1.5–2 hours so it feels like a stroll, not a rush.
- Pick colours wisely: Want your photos to pop against dark historic streets? Bright or complementary outfits make a huge difference. Charlotte and Steve’s reds and burgundies worked beautifully in the November light.
- Embrace the weather: Cloudy or drizzly days add incredible atmosphere.
- Plan your route: Curious about the best spots? I’ll help you choose a route that works for you—whether that’s the iconic Royal Mile, Vennel Steps, Victoria Street, The City Chambers, Signet Library, and Edinburgh Castle, or other popular locations like Dean Village, Circus Lane in Stockbridge, or Calton Hill. Not every couple wants to be in the bustling city, and that’s totally fine—we can tailor the shoot to suit your style and pace. For Charlotte and Steve, this was their first time in Edinburgh, which made the photos even more special as we explored the city together.
- Be patient with tourists & traffic: Popular spots can get busy. Sometimes we pause, wait a few minutes, or find a quieter side street.
- Walking pace matters: Don’t try to tick off every landmark. A relaxed pace lets you chat, laugh, and connect naturally.
- Layer up: Scarves, jackets, and textures not only keep you cosy—they look gorgeous on camera.
And the most important tip? Have fun. Focus on each other, make each other laugh, sneak a kiss, and let your connection shine. That’s how we get authentic, joyful photos.

Why connection matters more than anything
So why do engagement shoots matter so much? Because feeling comfortable in front of your photographer changes everything.
Charlotte and Steve’s mini moon shoot was a perfect example. Because we already knew each other from their wedding, the session felt effortless. They could just be themselves, explore Edinburgh, and enjoy their time together, while I captured natural, joyful moments.
Even little details—like Steve gently brushing a hair away from Charlotte’s face, or her nudging him playfully—become memories in the photos. That’s the magic of a shoot where connection and comfort are at the centre.
